The Bill of Rights

6th graders, which part of the first amendment of the Bill of Rights do you believe is the most important: freedom of religion, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, or freedom to petition the government (create a strong lead and 3 reasons why this part is so crucial to the Bill of Rights).

Gandhi's words

6th graders, we have moved from South Africa and have traveled to India. We just finished watching Gandhi, the movie. One of Gandhi's most famous quotes is:

"When I despair, I remember that all throughout history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it-always"

Gandhi appeared to have shown truth and love throughout his whole life. Write about 3 moments from the movie that you observed in which he showed this truth and love. If you finish, you can write a reflection about what you think about Gandhi so far.

Prisoner: #466/64

Yesterday, we read about Nelson Mandela's experiences in prison after he was sentenced to life plus 5 in the year 1964. Today, we will answer a few questions based on this reading:
What was life like in prison for Mandela (3 pieces of evidence).
Why was Mandela such a fighter? (2 pieces of evidence).
Finally, Mandela said to Winnie in a letter, "Sometimes I feel like who is on the sidelines, who has missed life itself" Do you think Mandela missed life or do you think Mandela is living life. Explain your thinking.

Amazed

This process of blogging is really an amazing opportunity for us. Getting the chance to see what Kofi, Nelson, Sojourner, MLK Jr., Dred Scott, and everyone else wrote was incredible.

I have two questions for today:

1. The African National Congress formed out of hopes to stop apartheid. After 20 years, memebers were frustrated. Why? (1 paragraph)

2. Nelson Mandela is a powerful leader who inspired black South Africans to fight against injustice and apartheid. If you had a chance to meet him, what would you say to him? (2 paragraphs)

First questions...

So, I guess I have a couple of questions that I want to ask you today.
Remember, your grade will be based on how thoughtful you are about your answers.

1. As we have been reading about apartheid in South Africa, what are you thoughts on Nelson Mandela? (1 paragraph).

2. What does this quote mean to you?
There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintops of our desires.....

Welcome!!

Dear 6th grade,

I have been so excited about starting this adventure on this blog with you. We are going to be responding to questions based on what we have been doing in class. I'm excited to see where our thoughts take us....so let's get started!!
